The Abbotsford Canucks are the affiliate team or “farm team” of the Vancouver Canucks. However, before they were located in Abbotsford, British Columbia, they were in Utica, New York. The Utica Comets were the Vancouver Canucks affiliate team from 2013-2021. The team was then relocated to Abbotsford to bring them closer to their parent team, which had been a multi-year venture.
Bringing the affiliate team closer to the parent team, created the ability for fans to watch their favourite players develop in the AHL before potentially moving on to the NHL. Since the inaugural season in 2021 the Abbotsford Canucks have seen a number of fan favourites called up to Vancouver, whether it’s to fill in, or get brand new NHL specific contracts. In the 2024/2025 season alone, 16 players moved between the Abbotsford Canucks and the Vancouver Canucks.
The team itself has also seen a number of great achievements in their first 5 years in Abbotsford. In their first season they made it to the preliminary round of the Calder Cup playoffs, however, they fell to the Bakersfield Condors, in a best of 3 round.
The following 2022/2023 season they met the Condors again in the preliminary round, however, Abbotsford flipped the script and advanced to the first round of the playoffs. However, they would lose 3-1, in a best of 5 against the Calgary Wrangles.
In 2023/2024 they met the Colorado Eagles in the preliminary round where they would win 2-1 in the best of 3 round. The win sent them to the first round of the playoffs, where they were eliminated by the Ontario Reign.
The 2024/2025 season would mark a historic run for the Abbotsford Canucks. They met the Tucson Roadrunners in the preliminary round where they defeated them 2-1 in a best of 3.
They then faced off against the Coachella Valley Firebirds in round 1, where they eliminated them, 3-1 in a best of 5 match-up.
In round 2 Abbotsford faced the Condors in a best of 5, where they won 3-2. Round 3 saw them faced off against the Texas Stars for the first time in franchise history. Abbotsford won the best of 7 match up 4-2.
In the finals of the Calder Cup playoffs Abbotsford met the Charlotte Checkers, another first time match up for the franchise. Abbotsford won it all, after defeating Charlotte 4-2, in a best of 7 round.
Not only did this Calder Cup victory mark the first championship achievement for the Canucks franchise, it was the first time a Pacific Division team, as well as a Western Canadian team would win the Calder Cup in AHL history.
The 2025/2026 season was quite a different story compared to the previous year. With a number of injuries impacting the Vancouver Canucks. In 45 games, 46 different players dressed for the team. Which led to inconsistent lines and team dynamic at the start of the season for both Abbotsford and Vancouver. Abbotsford alone dressed 6 different goalies throughout the season.
Despite a challenging season, with many new faces added to the lineup and loss of a number of fan favourites, the last half of the season saw a shift. Players found their footing leading to more consistency in game play. New players filled holes, which led to positive changes in team dynamics.
The 2026/2027 season will be one to watch, if the team is able to continue building off their new foundation. The future looks bright with young players that have been acquired throughout the season and veteran players that have stepped up to lead and mentor them.
